Also known as the caveman diet, the paleo diet in our day and age is really about eating real, unprocessed foods - because let’s be real - we’re not hunters or gatherers, and we have access to a microwave.
There are varied interpretations of the paleo diet, but most are grain and refined sugar free. This means substituting your bread and rice with nuts and seeds, and having fruit or perhaps some honey as the only form of sugar in your diet.
Whether you want to give paleo a go, or are looking for some new paleo-friendly breakfast options, here are three delicious recipes to help you start your day the paleo way…
1) One Minute Paleo Date & Walnut Muffin
A grain and gluten free muffin that’s low carb but tastes like a piece of cake.
- 1 teaspoon coconut oil
- 1 free-range egg, whisked
- 1 medjool date, pitted and mashed
- ¼ cup almond meal or LSA (a blend of linseeds, sunflower seeds and almonds)
- 1 tablespoon walnuts, roughly chopped
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon gluten free baking powder
Method | Serves 1
- Place the coconut oil in a mug; If the oil is solid, microwave on high for 10-20 seconds or until melted.
- Add the whisked egg and mashed date to the mug and mix the wet ingredients well.
- Add the remaining ingredients and mix again, until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
- Microwave on high for one minute; If the top doesn’t look cooked through, microwave for another 10-20 seconds.
- Allow to cool for a couple of minutes before eating straight out of the mug with a spoon or cake fork; Or turn the mug upside down onto a plate; It should slide out easily. Top with some coconut yoghurt if you’d like and enjoy!
2) Paleo Fruit & Nut Crumble
- 1/2–2/3 Cup frozen or fresh mixed berries
- 1 Medium-large very ripe banana, thickly sliced
- 1/2 Cup hazelnut meal
- 1.5 Tablespoons almonds, roughly chopped
- 1 Tablespoon coconut oil
- 1 Medjool date, pitted and mashed
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
- tiny pinch salt
Method | Serves 2-3
- Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius.
- Place and evenly distribute the berries and banana in a small, shallow ovenproof dish (approximately 4.5’’ x 7’’ x 1.5’’).
- In a small bowl, mix the remaining ingredients together to make the crumble; You may need to add a splash or two of hot water to make the mixture stickier.
- Place the crumble mixture on top of the fruit, pressing it down with a spoon and evening it out.
- Bake for around 30 minutes, or until the crumble is nice and golden. Eat warm or cold with a dollop of coconut yoghurt, extra cinnamon and a drizzle of your favourite nut butter if you’d like. This will keep in the fridge for about two days and is delicious warm or cold.
3) Paleo Muesli
A paleo diet doesn’t mean giving up cereal up for breakfast entirely - simply skip the oats and other grains (like rolled barley or wheat) and make up your own paleo-friendly muesli combo with your favourite nuts and seeds. I like LSA as a base, mixed with shredded coconut and chopped raw cashews. Top with fresh fruit, some almond milk or coconut yoghurt and you have yourself a wholesome, real food muesli (gluten free too).
