Latte Trends: Turmeric, Beetroot, Matcha and Charcoal

The superfood latte trend has taken both Instagram and the health food scene by storm. While I adore my morning coffee this new wave of lattes is a fun and tasty way to incorporate extra nutrition into your day. Switching to a superfood latte from a regular flat white is an excellent way to eliminate caffeine from your diet while still enjoying your morning ritual.

Here, I’ve selected five different lattes so you can take your pick next time you need a superfood fix.

1. Turmeric Latte

The turmeric latte - also referred to as ‘golden milk’ - is not so much a new trend, but is deeply rooted in Ayurvedic medicine and Indian culture. Turmeric is one of my favourite herbs and is fantastic for anti-inflammatory and protecting your liver and digestive system. This healing drink is a fantastic addition to your winter diet and is very easy to make. Below are two yummy recipes for you to enjoy.

Homemade Turmeric Latte

Ingredients

  • ½ tsp organic turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp organic ginger powder
  • ½ tsp organic cinnamon powder
  • a pinch of black pepper
  • 1 tsp of honey
  • 200ml warm coconut milk, organic milk or almond milk

Method

  1. Warm the milk up on the stove in a small spot
  2. Add the spices and stir gently
  3. Add honey to taste
  4. Mix until combined well
  5. Pour into a mug, top with cinnamon and enjoy!

Quick & Easy Turmeric Latte

Ingredients

Method

  1. Pour the Golden Quench into the saucepan
  2. Heat until simmering
  3. Add sweetener if desired
  4. Pour into mug
  5. Sit back, switch off and enjoy a mug of deliciousness
  6. Sprinkle with cinnamon if desired!

2. Beetroot Latte

The beetroot or red velvet latte is the perfect way to pack some extra nutrients into your day. Beetroots are a secret superfood that don’t get a lot of recognition but are filled with health promoting properties. Beets contain a rich source of vitamin C, antioxidants, may help lower blood pressure and reduce inflammation in the body. I haven’t got my hands on many beetroot lattes, however, I do recommend the red velvet latte mix by Nutra Organics. It combines beetroot powder with the healing ingredients of the turmeric latte to make one seriously vibrant drink.

Red Velvet Latte Recipe

Ingredients

Method

  1. Heat the milk to a warm temperature
  2. Add the Red Velvet Latte mix
  3. Stir to combine
  4. Sweeten to taste
  5. Enjoy!

3. Matcha Latte

Kick start your morning with a nourishing Matcha Latte! Matcha is made of pure green tea leaves ground into a fine powder and enjoying Matcha tea is an old tradition of Japanese culture. High quality Matcha is a great source of antioxidants and contains the amino acid L-Theanine, which is thought to enhance mood, memory and concentration. A Matcha Latte fuses Matcha powder with milk to create one healthy and wholesome drink. Below is my favourite Matcha Latte recipe.

Matcha Latte Recipe

Ingredients

  • ½ tsp organic Matcha powder
  • 200ml organic milk or mylk of choice
  • 1 tsp of organic honey

Method

  1. Warm the milk up (do not boil)
  2. Stir in the Matcha powder and honey
  3. Combine well
  4. Enjoy!

4.Charcoal Latte

The charcoal latte is a trend that is yet to win me over. It’s a latte concept that blends activated charcoal with your choice of milk. The dark colour of the charcoal is certainly intriguing, but this drink isn’t for everyone. While activated charcoal can be used to cleanse the digestive system and alleviate flatulence, it is an ingredient I would use with caution. Charcoal lines the digestive tract and can inhibit the absorption of medication and other nutrients.

5. Dandy Latte

Although Dandelion root might not be as exciting as a beetroot or charcoal latte, I could not write this blog without paying homage to this delicious hot drink. Dandelion root is a digestive and detoxifying herb that can help with bloating, indigestion and other gut symptoms. It’s a fantastic coffee alternative due to its earthy taste, rich aroma and dark colour. My recipe for a gut loving latte is below.

Dandy Latte

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp finely ground Dandelion root
  • ½ tsp organic cinnamon
  • a pinch organic ginger
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 200ml organic milk or mylk of choice

Method

  1. Place the milk in a small pot on the stove
  2. Add dandelion root and spices
  3. Combine well and sweeten to taste
  4. Savour and enjoy!
